Well am Johnny Deep, I had the privilege of spending three and a half months in Ghana, specifically in its vibrant capital city, Accra. As an Indian, I embarked on this journey with a plethora of questions and doubts about the people, climate, security, and daily life in Ghana.
However, my time in this West African nation turned out to be an eye-opening and enriching experience. In this article, I will share my insights into life in Ghana, covering aspects such as the people, climate, work culture, security, cost of living, and the numerous places to visit.
The People of Ghana
Friendly and Welcoming
One of the first things that struck me about Ghana was the warmth and hospitality of its people. Ghanaians are incredibly friendly, helpful, peaceful, and polite individuals. Whether you're curious about their country, culture, or cuisine, they are always eager to engage in conversation. Their openness and willingness to connect with strangers make interactions in Ghana memorable and heartwarming.
The Ghanaian Climate
A Balmy Coastal Climate
I visited Ghana during the months of July to September. The climate in Accra is characterized by its mildness. It's neither scorching hot nor excessively cold. However, due to its coastal location, the city can be a bit humid at times. This pleasant climate makes it enjoyable to explore the city and its surroundings throughout the year.
Work Culture in Ghana
Diligent and Cooperative
The work culture in Ghana differs somewhat from what I was accustomed to in India. Ghanaian professionals typically commence their workday at 8 in the morning and continue until 5 or 6 in the evening. What stood out to me was their strong work ethic, and they are exceptionally helpful and cooperative colleagues. Ghanaians possess a deep understanding of technology, processes, and best practices, making them valuable assets in the workplace.
Safety and Security
A Safe Haven
Safety was a paramount concern for me, given that I was in a foreign country. However, throughout my stay in Accra, I never encountered any security issues. I resided near Airport City on 37 Road and ventured out by myself regularly. I even went jogging in the evenings around 37 Road at 7-8 pm without any problems. During weekends, I explored three different beaches independently, and security was never a concern. Though some local friends cautioned me about pickpockets, I always exercised caution and faced no issues.
Cost of Living
Affordable Living
Contrary to my initial apprehensions, I found the cost of living in Ghana to be reasonable. I shopped for groceries and vegetables at places like Marina Mall on Airport Bypass Road, Koala Supermarket, Ghana Mall in Osu, and Sagar Impex in Osu for Indian food items. For a more economical shopping experience, Makola Market is an excellent choice, especially if you have a local friend or someone familiar with the area to accompany you.

A Wealth of Attractions
Ghana offers a treasure trove of places to visit, ranging from stunning beaches and majestic waterfalls to historic castles and captivating wildlife parks.
